Initial formation to become a nun lasts 9 to 12 years. To give you an idea of the stages of initial and ongoing formation, we include some quotes from the Instruction Cor Orans issued by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
"Between initial training and continuing education, there is continuity and coherence, so that the person is created with the desire to be trained every day of their life."
Aspirency

"The Aspirantate stage allows young women to have their first community experience at the monastery. It is a time of discernment and personal verification of the authenticity of their calling."
Noviciate

"The novitiate is the time when the novice begins her life in a given Institute; she continues her vocational discernment and deepens her own decision to follow Jesus Christ."
Solemn profession

" Continuing education is understood as a lifelong journey, both personal and communal, which should lead to conformity to the Lord Jesus and to the progressive appropriation of his sentiments in his total oblation to the Father."
Postulency

"By entering the Postulancy, the candidate is gradually introduced to the contemplative monastic life according to our specific charism."
Juniorate

"The juniorate or stage of temporary profession is the period from the first profession of temporary vows to solemn profession, and in which the professed continues her initial spiritual, doctrinal and practical formation, according to her own charism, for about 5 years."
